Flower Mound Symphony Orchestra Music Director
Job Summary:
The Music Director is a part-time position responsible for the musical leadership, artistic operation and development of the Flower Mound Symphony Orchestra (FMSO) and exercises authority in artistic matters according to the guidelines established by the Board of Directors. He or she should have an advanced degree in music or conducting as well as prior conducting experience. The Music Director must work closely within the limits set by the orchestra’s budget.
FMSO is a volunteer musician community orchestra performing works primarily from the standard symphonic repertoire as appropriate to its size and ability. The orchestra typically rehearses 8 weeks prior to each of 5 concerts (fall, holiday, spring, summer, patriotic) and often partners with local choir/chorus groups.
Other community performances and events as scheduled.

Summary of Essential Job Functions
Musical Responsibilities:
Conduct the Flower Mound Symphony Orchestra in rehearsals and concerts. Plan and schedule rehearsals. Provide coaching, interpretation, phrasing, education, bowing recommendations, and practice/rehearsal techniques to engage the members of the ensemble, encourage their level of participation, and improve their overall artistic quality.
Selecting works to be performed and determining the number of rehearsals and type of rehearsals (i.e. sectional, full orchestra) required. Selecting guest soloists, if desired, within budget.
Planning the concert season; regular concerts, special concerts, education activities, etc. Developing and planning each season well in advance in order to properly promote the season within marketing deadlines. Developing long-range artistic plans for the orchestra in conjunction with the Board of Directors.
Determine personnel needs and recruit, select and approve volunteer playing personnel; conducting auditions; selecting principal players and determining seating within each section; dismissing musicians. Engage additional personnel for specific concert or program as needs within approved budget.
Develop the overall artistic quality of the orchestra, inspiring players and assisting the ensemble to play to its highest potential.
Non-Musical Responsibilities:
Serve as a visible and active part of the community on behalf of FMCO. When appropriate represent the FMCO at various civic and community meetings and events.
Serve as the public face of the organization. Assist in the general promotion of the orchestra by being available for public appearances, concert publicity, press, fund raising and special events as needed.
Attend FMCO Board meetings and report on progress of activity of the Music Director.
